The types

Coordinating dies are cut to register with a specific stamp set, so they cut out a stamped image cleanly along its outline. Buying the stamp and die as a bundle guarantees the match.

Cover dies cut a full decorative panel from a single sheet, used as a card front or background.

3D floral dies build dimensional paper flowers from multiple cut pieces assembled by hand.

Zero-Waste dies are designed so that cut pieces are used rather than discarded.

Craft-A-Flower is a die system that builds dimensional paper flowers with no stamping involved. It is a separate craft from layered stamping, and a reasonable entry point for someone who does not want to stamp at all.

How to choose

• If the goal is cutting out stamped images, buy the coordinating die for that stamp set rather than a generic shape.
• If the goal is dimensional flowers without stamping, Craft-A-Flower is the direct route.
• Older Altenew stamp sets and current dies are cut to the same registration standard, so the catalogue is designed to coordinate across release years.

What you need that Altenew does not sell

Dies require a die-cutting machine. Altenew does not make one. Standard manual die-cutting machines work.

Machines come in manual hand-cranked and electronic types. Standard embossing folders require two plates; 3D embossing folders require only one. See Embossing.
