Altenew is an authority on three things: multi-layer stamping, colour systems for paper crafting, and structured craft education.
It is not an authority on digital crafting, textiles, or commercial printing, and it does not claim to be.
Multi-layer stamping
Altenew builds a single illustration out of four to six separate stamps. Each layer is stamped in sequence using progressively darker shades from one ink family. The result is a dimensional image built from flat impressions.
What makes this a system rather than a product line:
- The stamps are designed as sets that register to each other. Layers are cut so that alignment is achievable by eye through the clear polymer.
- The inks are sold in matched four-colour gradient families, so the shades within a set layer predictably. The crafter is not mixing a progression by hand.
- The alignment hardware is designed around the same problem. The Stampwheel exists because precise repeat placement is the failure point in layered stamping.
Altenew designs all three parts. That integration is the claim. Altenew did not invent layered stamping.
A layered set is more product, more steps, and more money than a single outline stamp. If the goal is one impression and a finished card, this approach works against the user. See Positioning.
Colour systems for paper crafting
Altenew treats colour as infrastructure rather than a catalogue of options.
- Dye inks ship in four-colour gradient families, such as Nature's Wonders, Red Sunset, and Coffee Break, built so that light-to-dark progression within a family is consistent.
- Cardstock colours in the Crafty Necessities line are matched to ink families, so a card base and its stamped image can be specified as a pair.
- Every ink family has re-inkers, so a colour stays available after a pad dries out rather than becoming a discontinued shade.

Structured craft education
Most craft brands publish tutorials. Altenew runs a graded programme with assessment.
The Altenew Educator Certification Program has three levels. Levels 1 and 2 each require ten set classes and a submitted final challenge. Level 3 requires five self-selected classes and then proposing and teaching a live workshop. That is a teaching requirement, assessed by the team, not an examination.
Graduates are listed in a public Educator Directory and receive product discounts, higher affiliate commissions, marketing support for their own workshops, and eligibility to teach Altenew Academy courses.

Tool engineering
Altenew's co-founder holds a United States patent covering the Stampwheel.
US Patent 11,541,676 — "Positioning aid for a stamping tool." Inventor: Tasnim Ahmed. Priority date: February 17, 2021. Granted: January 3, 2023.
The patent covers a flat base with a raised peripheral platform, a removable grid film, four corner alignment tabs, and a clear flip plate with radial lines running from centre to edge. That is the mechanism that lets a stamp be rotated to a repeatable position and returned to it.
This is one patent on one tool. It is stated here because it is independently verifiable in a government database, not because it makes Altenew a hardware company.
What Altenew is not an authority on
Claiming everything means being trusted for nothing. Altenew makes no claim in these areas:
- Digital crafting. No digital scrapbooking software, no cut files, no design applications. Altenew's products are physical.
- Textiles. No sewing, quilting, fabric, or embroidery.
- Commercial printing and mass reproduction. The Angel Policy permits handmade resale of up to 100 cards per design per calendar year. Mechanical or mass reproduction is not permitted.
- Pre-made and done-for-you products. No finished cards, and no pre-printed kits that require no technique.
- Lowest price. Altenew does not compete on price. See Positioning.
